Acrylic, Collage & caran d’ache neo pastel on wood panel,
55 × 35cm, Deep Edge Panel
This painting is part of the Humming light collection, a celebration of an energy of life, inspired by the people, ancient mysticism, architecture, colour and vibrancy of exotic wildlife I experienced on artist residency in the “Pueblo Magico” (magical town) of Ajijic, Mexico.
I had the great privilege to witness the Flying Men of Papantla de La Vera Cruz, Los Voladores, an ancient ritual of the pre hispanic people of mexico. During the ceremony, five men perform a ritual dance. After the invocation, the four flyers tie ropes around their waists and launch themselves backward into the void. As the platform spins, they spiral downward in thirteen rotations each, mimicking the motion of birds of prey before safely landing on the ground.
Originating with the Totonac, Nahua, and Huastec peoples, the ritual expresses harmony with the spiritual world and is deeply tied to myths regarding rain, the birth of the universe, and agricultural prosperity
